Valea Prahovei (The Valley of river Prahova) is the most accessible ski resort when coming from Bucharest. You simply take DN1, a good road but crowded during rush hours, towards Brasov through Ploiesti. You will find the most popular Romanian mountain resorts: Azuga, Busteni, Predeal, Sinaia. They are practically united one to another and accommodation opportunities are numerous.
The ski season lasts from December to April, sometimes May on certain altitudes. But they are fun destinations all year round for hiking.
Sinaia is the mountain resort closest to Bucharest and has to offer a lot of tourist attractions. Be sure not to miss The Peles Castle (Castelul Peles), the winter residence of Romanian monarchs with its impressive architecture and art collection.
